Reels, Stories or Feed Posts: Which Format Fits What?

Feed posts, carousels, Stories and Reels all do different jobs. A simple guide to choosing the right format.

Instagram started as a simple feed of square photos. Today you can post single images, carousels, Stories, Reels and live video, and each one behaves differently. Knowing what each format is good at makes it easier to plan, and saves you from trying to do everything at once.

Feed photos

The classic photo post still has a place. Feed posts stay on your profile, so they shape how your account looks to new visitors. They work well for strong single images, announcements and anything you want people to find later.

Good for: portfolio work, product shots, milestones, a polished first impression.

Tip: portrait images (4:5) take up more of the screen than square ones, which helps them stand out as people scroll.

Carousels

A carousel lets you share up to several images or videos in one post that people swipe through. Because each swipe counts as engagement and people spend longer on the post, carousels are popular for educational content.

Good for: step-by-step guides, before-and-after comparisons, photo series from an event, short tips with one idea per slide.

Tip: make the first slide clear about what people will get if they swipe.

Stories

Stories are full-screen photos or videos that disappear after 24 hours, unless you save them to Highlights. They feel more casual, and many followers watch Stories from accounts they know rather than browsing the feed.

Good for: behind-the-scenes moments, quick updates, polls and questions, sharing links and reminding people about new posts.

Tip: use stickers such as polls and question boxes to start conversations. Save your best Stories into Highlights, which sit on your profile; our article on Instagram photo editing has tips on making Highlights look consistent.

Reels

Reels are short vertical videos with music, audio and editing tools. They are the format Instagram has pushed hardest in recent years, and they are often shown to people who do not follow you yet, which makes them the main way to reach new audiences.

Good for: reaching new people, tutorials, trends, humour and quick demonstrations.

Tip: the first second matters. Start with movement, a question or a clear promise, and add captions because many people watch without sound.

Live video

Live broadcasts let you talk to followers in real time. They take more effort but can create a real sense of community.

Good for: Q&As, launches, interviews and events.

How to mix them

You do not need to use every format every week. A realistic rhythm for many small accounts might be:

  • One or two Reels a week to reach new people.
  • One feed post or carousel with your most useful or best-looking content.
  • Stories on most days, even if just a quick update.

Pay attention to which posts get saved and shared, not just liked. Those are the best signs that a format is working for your audience. For more on how Instagram decides what people see, read our article on how the Instagram algorithm works.
